So there is this remake of the epic "Roots" being shown now. I saw parts of the original and remember some of the characters from the original. Honestly, I was excited to see this version just to see what changes they could make. So far it has been a good, if not spectacular, watch. It gets hard to watch certain parts of it, just like any other movie dealing with slavery. It's an ugly subject and there's no way to make it beautiful. There are so many different stories from that time period that haven't been told yet. My mother and sister traced our family history back as far as they could and it started with a Native American. There are many more storied like that that have never been told. That's interesting to me. Blacks owned Blacks. There are rarely any stories about abolitionists sensationalized. That's why I want to see "The Free State of Jones". It's a story that hasn't been told often. 12 Years a Slave was a hard movie to watch. It told a bit of a unique side, but it still was such a violent, anger inducing movie. Some people don't like the fact that they are remaking it. There is the risk that it could be ruined, but maybe it's something that needed to be done. I'm not going to be the one who makes that decision. So I'm going to watch it like it's new because I never watched the original all the way through. I was younger when it came out, so my attention span was short I'm sure. Nevertheless. I respect the people that wanted to take part in the process of making the new vision come to life. Do I get tired of traveling down this road in history? It gets old, but at least I can see my people. It's not like they're everywhere. Here's to hoping for creativity to rear its beautiful head again in our community. We can do more than just biopics.
